Hello 'Unputdownables!'
Did you know that there's a unique town in the Australian Outback where everyone lives underground? Not only are their homes below the surface, but so are their stores, schools, and even churches.
It's called Coober Pedy, and during the day, temperatures soar to a scorching 120° F (49° C). The conditions are so brutal that people are forced to live the way they might in a colony on Mars. But in their underground spaces, the air remains exactly room temperature year-round, with no heating or air conditioning required.
Why in the would anyone make their home in such an inhospitable environment?
Opals.
This part of Australia produces 90% of the global supply, and miners from all over the world flock there in hopes of uncovering the crown jewel, a dazzling crystal opal, which can fetch more than a million dollars.
It turns out that Coober Pedy is the setting of my latest novel, Outback Diamonds, the 16th book in the 'unputdownable' Lust, Money & Murder series. This standalone book follows Elaine Brogan as she investigates a treacherous counterfeit diamond operation in the harsh Australian Outback.
I absolutely love researching a book, and this one was no exception. Transporting readers to unusual places that are vastly different from their home environments is a true passion of mine.
